This Soviet medal was issued to civil and military personal, involved in 1986 Chernobyl Nuclear Disaster. Know as liquidators, they most included firefighters, police, civil troops, and medical staff. Although lesser known are the janitors, bus divers, hunters, and miners. Many of died and suffered chronic illnesses, caused by acute radiation exposure.
To honor their sacrifice the Chernobyl Liquidator Medal was issued. Constructed from cast brass and colored enamel. It's center depict a drop of blood on a blue field, overlaid by a radiation diagram. Thus honoring their sacrifice in the face of dangerous radiation.
